In the evenings, we ask our guests to dress appropriately in bars and restaurants. Therefore, no swimwear, flip flops, sleeveless shirts or sportswear are allowed. What was the highlight of Esencia de La Palma by Princess
Pleasant, but points to improve on
Picking up a last minute deal that was to good to pass up on meant I was at the La Palma Princess for a little bit of winter sun in November. I stayed half board on the escenia (adults only) and it is was just what the doctor ordered. Facilities are slightly below that of other TUI platinums I have stayed in, as slightly more on the basic side, however the stay was overall pleasant. I didn’t use the main pool at all so couldn’t comment, however on the escenia side all 3 pools were clean, well-maintained and one acclimated/acclimatised. Of the 3 restaurants, Origen was my favourite for dinner. All the staff were friendly, helpful and the live piano really makes it. The gentleman cooking fresh pasta is a really credit to the place! I also frequented El Mirador for Breakfast due to the views and unlike Origen, no booking was required. Both restaurants have a smaller selection than the main one but that is to be expected given it is not catering to the masses.
My biggest gripe would be the Food Market restaurant and it really lets the hotel down. The escenia area appears understaffed and you have to flag down a waiter to get the tables outside cleared. Given the popularity of this area, I would have thought this would be more regularly attended/passed through however that was not the case on 2-3 of our visits across breakfast/dinner. It is also extremely confusing what is and isn’t included in the half board. I upgraded to include drinks in my package and was never questioned on this until the final night when I was helping myself as usual - at which point I just flashed my yellow card and was left alone. However, no idea how the staff keep track of this at all as for half board there is no wrist band. Equally, the hotel is very remote and I was grateful to have hired a car (free parking in a multi story on site is available, you don’t need to abandon it on the road as many seem to). One day I didn’t fancy the drive so visited el Mirador in an attempt to pay and procure some lunch. The access from the adults only side puts you straight into the main buffet area - comparative to the main hotel entrance that takes you past a payment terminal - to say I was made to feel like a criminal would not be exaggerating. I had stepped in and was looking around hopeless for a member of staff (to which there was none), whilst I waited I was looking around as to what the options were (baring in mind I didn’t even have a plate) only for a waitress to passive aggressively say hello to me and ask me what I was doing. I asked if I could pay for lunch to which she huffed and took me over to the terminal I hadn’t noticed. It was extremely embarrassing and put me off the thought of food entirely, however I paid to avoid further confrontation. Not sure if it’s something the hotel struggles with but felt unnecessarily aggressive given I genuinely wanted to pay. Finally, the spa is confusing and still eludes me.

Swimming pools
Breakfast had a good choice but the quality of the food was poor, no fresh breads, hot food, cold. Should have put the Gym in the centre it was a 15 minute walk. 15 minute walk to get beach towels. On checkout we were told to go back to the room and get the beach towels. We declined the offer

Good but not great, as all else in that island.
Food selection on all meals was good, but usually the taste was bland, almost like hospital food. Lacked creativity.
